Join the Section

Membership of the Property Law Section of the New Zealand Law Society is available to members and associate members of the New Zealand Law Society. Only practising lawyers may be full members of the Law Society. Associate Law Society membership is designed for people with close links to the legal profession. Associate Section membership is available to:

  • legal academics
  • anyone with a law degree actively involved in property law, such as government officials
  • associate members of the New Zealand Law Society, including legal executives.

We welcome new members to assist with the work of the section's committees. These committees consider issues of practical relevance to property lawyers and their clients, issue guidance and practice notes from time to time, and produce submissions for presentation to government.

What does the section offer you?

  • Membership of a national body specifically representing property lawyers
  • Up-to-date information on property law changes likely to affect you and your clients
  • Quarterly publication The Property Lawyer dedicated to property law matters and written for lawyers
  • Marketing assistance through national promotion of property lawyers within an overall master brand
  • Use of the 'Property Law Section member firm' brand to qualifying members
  • Strategies to respond to competition and technological developments
  • The opportunity to participate in the section's accreditation scheme
  • Continuing access to seminars, conferences and other continuing education opportunities on property law issues
  • A website with a members-only area containing membership resources
  • A free listing in the website's 'Find a property lawyer' directory

The section is run by a professional Secretariat, with an Executive Committee comprising lawyer members, who develop strategies and oversee the running of the section. The Executive Committee appoints technical committees, and also draws on specialist expertise from the wider membership.

What does it cost?

The membership fee is $160.00 (incl GST). If second and subsequent members of a firm also wish to join, their membership fee is reduced to $140.00 (incl GST) each.

You can apply to join the section using the Application form. An invoice for the membership fee will be sent to you when we receive your application.
